As the French settlers began to move to northern North America, they had to adapt to a new geography. They designed, arranged, and built structures to fit the new location, climate, and resources that were available.
Conditions in the New World proved to be more severe than back in Europe. They were isolated and fearful of the unknown. They constantly faced death from disease, attacks, and starvation.
Different challenges faced the settlers depending upon where they lived. Though they all started out similarly, those who lived in the countryside developed different responses to the challenges of this new land. How they adapted depended upon whether they settled in a city (urban area) or in the countryside, (rural area.)
